What is Telepresence?

Real-time videoconferencing technology and techniques designed to give the appearance of being present at a face-to-face meeting.

When implemented correctly, telepresence opens up the power of face-to-face communication.  You may be familiar with consumer-grade video conferencing where participants see each other in small windows, with no eye-contact, often without collaboration tools and that sometimes suffers from poor video and audio quality.

Telepresence systems offer business-grade, secure, dependable and high-quality face-to-face communication.  Rich collaboration tools provide highly collaborative communication.  For example, Cisco's EX90 personal executive telepresence endpoint has a built-in video camera than when tilted down automatically switches to a high quality document camera that allows other video participants to view real-time highlights or editing of documents.

True telepresence also allows real eye-to-eye contact between participants while conferencing.  And that makes a big difference.  Eye contact is a key element that enables effective interaction.  You have to see it to believe it.

Of course, telepresence also allows us to perceive all of the other non-verbal cues that are only available in a face-to-face meeting.

Telepresence brings all of the richness of nonverbal communication with the ease of making a phonecall.

Does your law firm have a Legal Telepresence strategy?

Telepresence isn't just for Fortune 500 companies anymore.  By 2015, it's estimated that 90% of internet traffic will be video.  One million minutes of video will cross the global network every second.  Is your law firm ready?  At LegalTelepresence, we help lawyers implement telepresence systems and strategies.  LegalTelepresence, LLC was founded by lawyers that use telepresence to:

 - Strengthen client relationships through regular face-to-face meetings – via telepresence
 - Significantly reduce travel time.  And expense.  And client discounts
 - Improve productivity through video collaboration
 - Communicate more effectively with opposing counsel and other stakeholders

Why now?
2012 is the first year small and medium size law firms can participate in persistent business-grade telepresence solutions.  Traditionally, true telepresence deployments have required expensive and sophisticated back-end infratstructure.  The cost of the back-end equipment plus the need for specialized IT staff that have the necessary audio/video specialties to administer the deployment erected barriers to entry for small and medium size law firms.
Now is different.  We have partnered with Cisco to deliver the new Cisco Callway cloud services to law firms.  Cisco has taken all of the expensive and sophisticated back-end telepresence infrastructure and put it up in the cloud.  All of the heavy video processing, firewall traversal and other necessary elements to business-grade telepresence are performed with precision and high speed at Cisco's state-of-the-art dedicated telepresence data centers.
All you need is an Internet connection with sufficient bandwidth.  It's that simple.
